I'm very happy with this DVD player, I bought one refurbished by factory and its perfect.Great quality, sound, image and turns - which is so convenient.
We tried 6 DVD's and it was the same deal for each. So it has been used maybe a dozen or so times. We bought this DVD player in April of 2009 and only use it for trips. It seems like the reader eye won't move anymore. It just recently stopped loading DVD's. The disk spins for a few seconds and won't load. Anyway, after reading the other negative comments, I'm convinced this thing is trashed and time to buy a new one. Sorry consumer reports, this one is hit or miss.
DO NOT BUY. I had the receipt and all of the paperwork, but it cost just as much to pay for the labor to have it repaired as it would for a new DVD player. This is the biggest piece of junk I have ever purchased. It stopped loading DVDs after just a few uses - the day the 90 day parts & labor warranty expired. I called Toshiba to ask if they would cover parts & labor and sat on hold for about half an hour. I emailed them instead, but not surprisingly, they never emailed me back.
After calling Toshiba directly and getting bounced around, I finally gave up, returned the unit and purchased a Sony. While it was a relatively inexpensive device compared to the Sony, we found out why. We purchased three of these for our children (ages 6-11). The Sony is far superior in build quality and while $50 more, it was worth every penny. The batteries are very poor and do not hold a charge for anywhere near the advertised timeframes. One of the units was defective right out of the box and did not take a charge at all. Sony products work as advertised unlike Toshiba. I've had similar experiences with other Toshiba products and will never buy anything from them again.
This player is advertised as "multi system" ie it should play eg NTSC (ie Region1/USA) and Pal (ie Region2/Europe) disks - however multi system to Toshiba means different format disks not multi region disks. It will not play discs bought in another region. Beware.
